How to Download

MP3 files and the programs that allow you to play and create them are all available on the Internet. To use them, you will need to download them onto your computer. Downloading is the process of copying a file from the Internet onto your computer. The exact set of steps you will need to follow to download a file will vary depending on which Internet browser you use.

When you see a file you would like to download from the Internet, look for a link that is labeled something like "Download" or "Click here to download". Listed below are examples of how to download a file using Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator (the two most popular Internet browsers).

Internet Explorer

  1. Click once with your left mouse button on the link.*
  2. A box labeled "File Download" should open.
  3. Click the "Save this file to disk" option and press OK.
  4. You will be asked to specify where you would like to save the file on your computer.
  5. Find the folder to which you would like to save the file, highlight it, and press SAVE.
  6. A progress box will pop up. This box shows you information about the progress of the download (how much time left, your transfer rate, etc.).
  7. When the progress reaches 100%, your file has been downloaded and you can now access it from your computer.

Netscape Navigator

  1. Click once with your left mouse button on the link.*
  2. A box should open asking you what you want to do with this file.
  3. Click the "Save it to disk" option and press OK.
  4. You will be asked to specify where you would like to save the file on your computer.
  5. Find the folder to which you would like to save the file, highlight it, and press SAVE.
  6. A progress box labeled "Saving Location" will pop up. This box shows you information about the progress of the download (how much time left, your transfer rate, etc.).
  7. When the progress reaches 100%, your file has been downloaded and you can now access it from your computer.

*Note: If your browser immediately tries to play the file from the Internet when you click on it, there is another way for you to download the file. Click once with your right mouse button on the link and select "Save Target As" (Internet Explorer) or "Save Link As" (Netscape Navigator) from the context menu. Then, follow the steps above, starting with #4.
